Description

As part of the Kunsthalle Wien’s central focus on photography, a selection of works from the Gundlach Collection, Hamburg, will be put on show. F. C. Gundlach, who was born in 1926 in Heinebach, Hesse, Germany, is the contemporary equivalent of a renaissance character. As a legendary fashion photographer he shot, among other things, some 160 covers and 5.000 pages of editorial fashion photography for the German Brigitte magazine – in addition to being a gallery owner, collector, curator and initiator of a foundation. Since 2003, he has served as founding director of the House of Photography, at Hamburg’s Deichtorhallen, which was co-initiated by him. Gundlach never understood fashion photography as being concerned solely with beautiful appearances. He saw it, also, as a demiurgic tool for analysing social relations and civilised forms of expression. “Fashion photography,” F. C. Gundlach has stated, “is always concerned with interpretations and staged productions. It reflects and visualises the zeitgeist of today and anticipates the spirit of tomorrow.” This perception also shaped his attitude towards art in general. Gundlach collected and presented artists who matched his conception of beauty as a prism of contemporary contradictions and reflected an image of Man in his various outward appearances – such as fashions, poses, facial expressions and gestures.
